Are the Trinity Bay Garlands connected to the Conception Bay Garlands? The Conception Bay Garlands (my immediate ancestors) are traced back with reasonable certainty to John (#32), planter fisherman in Mosquito Cove (Bristol's Hope) in 1675. The Trinity Bay Garlands (the Lester-Garland crowd of some fame) are traced back to Joseph (#33) (who may have been John, not Joseph according to research by Gordon Hancock) of East Lulworth (1640-1732). Joseph/John (#33) had sons Joseph (#35) and John (#1216). Are the two branches connected? The first possibility is that the Conception Bay Garlands (John #32-> George #31-> John Davis #29-> Henry #27-> George #12...) have no connection to the Trinity Bay Garlands / Lesters John #33-> Joseph #35-> George #151-> John Bingley #162...). But, according to my Aunt, Mable Garland (#56), tradition has it that the Garlands in Nfld originated from 3 sons. So, a second possibility is that John (#32) of Mosquito Cove in 1675 is, in fact, the same person as Joseph/John (#33) 1640-1732 of East Lulworth who spent part of his life at Mosquito Cove. The dates fit and it was common at the time to travel from England to Nfld as part of the fishing trade. If that were true, John (#33) would now have 3 sons, Joseph, John and George. There is no inconsistency of birth or death dates with this scenario. A third possibility is that John (#32) of Mosquito Cove is the son of John (#33), ie, is one and the same as John (#1216). There is no evidence to support this and if John (#32) was the son of John (#33, b1640-d1732) then John (#32) would have likely been born no earlier than 1660. It is unlikely that he could have been well established in 1675 as evidenced by census data. Thus this possibility is discounted. It remains speculation, nonetheless and, consequently, I have left the two lines separated in the family tree database. If you find mistakes or you have new information, please let me know. |
