Moved to Digby, Nova Scotia and raised his children there. Selby died young. Birth record at http://ngb.chebucto.org/Vstats/pre-1891-car-ang-bap-1860-1891-car.shtml shows dob as 1883. But the obit https://sites.rootsweb.com/~nsdigby/obituaries/query013.htm says he died in 1932 at age 57, therefore born in 1875. His marriage record to Annie Butt http://ngb.chebucto.org/Vstats/post-1891-vol-4-mar-1901-1905-hg.shtml has him at age 22 in 1901, ie born in 1979. So either there is an error in the records or the lineage is incorrect (ie there is more than one Selby Garland).
Marriage record says Selina was 23. This is inconsistent.

As the Halifax Explosion (Thursday, December 6, 1917) was occurring Susanna was giving Clifford a bath. She bent down to protect him and glass was blown into her face and head. As a result she went blind. Several years later she died of a brain tumor which was caused by her injuries. David Collins was working at the waterfront and was blown into the water but not seriously injured. He later moved to New York where he remarried. No children were born of this marriage. Dorothy looked after her younger sisters and the four boys were sent to an orphanage in Truro. Three of the boys ended up in the Cape Breton area. Lawrence was brought up in the Truro area. All info on Susanna's decendants are from [VM2001b]. Some of her children were born in Quebec City and some in Halifax.

Talented artist.
Grandmother of Kirsten Halvorsen. Theresa left St. John's for Oslo Norway in 1947 and never returned.
Father is listed as William. Link to William #1405 is speculative but possible since William had a son Thomas.
Is this the Thomas who married Georgina Moores. The marriage record says Thomas was 30 whereas this Thomas would have been 31 - close and there is no other Thomas on record matching better.
There was a Thomas and Mary Garland, died as shown. Records also show a marriage of Thomas Garland and Mary Sparks as shown. It is speculation that these two couples are one and the same. The headstone was erected by their son.

Registry of Wills - Registrars Office, Superior Court of Nfld, Vol 1: excerpt Wm Garland Sr, deceased "I give and bequeath to Elizabeth REID, my lawful and beloved wife my dwelling house and furniture, cow, heffer and small meadow...after the decease of my wife, I give my dwelling house to my youngest son John, and ...3 stores and proceeds I give to my 6 sons, viz: Henry, William, Nathaniel, David, Thomas and John to be equally divided. Signed 11 Nov 1836, Witnesses = Ingham Sutcliff, John Rogers. William had 6 sons as listed but it is speculation that M. Henry was his father. [LC2001] says Nathaniel's father, William, was born in Poole?, Dorset, England.

One of Sam's daughters Florence Noseworthy (nee Benson) lived behind Bill and Elsie Garland with access via a lane between Bill Garland and William Benson. In 1946 or 47 Bill and Elsie sold their home to Bill's brother John Garland who had returned from WWII service.

According to Mary Perfect, Selena was short and rather stout. She suffered from severe diabetes, had a bad heart, yet lived to a ripe old age. She suffered from bad moods, perhaps due to depression. Died at age 75 years, 11 months according to headstone but that would make her dob April 1889, not 1890 as per the headstone??
