[WHITTEN2002a] John Earle Husband of Fanny Garland Sister of Justice Garland,
from "Prowse's History of Nfld": "There is a very interesting account of the
defence of Little Belle Isle in 1696-97. The first resident on this small
island in Conception Bay was John Earle, a West Countryman. He was a very
smart, well educated young man; just of age in 1698, when he married in
Harbour Grace Fanny Garland, sister of the well-known Justice Garland; a Mr.
Pinsent and a Mr. Lilly married other sisters of Mr. Garland. The French
attacked Little Belle Isle with two barges full of soldiers. John Earle had
cannon upon the cliff; he sank one barge with a shot, and the other then rowed
off; he had scarecrows dressed up as men on the top of the cliff to make the
enemy believe he had a large force. Earle used to tell of the high prices in
those days; Garland, of Trinity, as a favour to a relation, sold him one
spring one cwt. and a half of flour for £5 st'g., and one hh'd. of salt
for £2. John Earle lived and died and was buried on Little Belle Isle.
One of his sons, William, lived in Juggler's Cove, Bay Roberts, and died there
of small pox in 1777. The other son, John, lived in Portugal Cove, and is
mentioned in the census of 1794-5. There are numerous descendants of both
branches. The family bible of the first John Earle's wife is in the St. John's
Museum."
[WHITTEN2002a] Lived in Portugal Cove, and is mentioned in the census of 1794-5.
[WHITTEN2002a] Lived in Juggler's Cove, Bay Roberts, and died there of small

Speculation: Is this Charles, son of Henry Frederick, the same Charles who
married Anne Coughlan? Info on marriage and children supplied by KH1999
(based on Harbour Grace research). Charles or his son Joseph appear to have
converted to Catholism. [EFB1980] notes Ann as wife of Charles, son of Henry.
So the link appears sound.
The Daily News, 2 Nov 1944 gives notice of Charles' death. Lists living
relatives as daughter Joan, sisters Mary, Agnes and Jessie, brothers John and
William. All the rest of immediate family are therefore presumed deceased.
Charles was listed as a teacher when married in 1919 at age 30.
Twin to James.
Listed as widower at time of marriage to Sarah.
Magistrate Of Harbour Grace in 1762.
[ref CUFF] Charles was directly involved in the cod fishery as well as the
passenger and provisions trade in Conception Bay in the 1700s. He also rented
fishing rooms and other property in the Conception Bay area to migratory
fishermen and planters. He became the Justice of the Peace in 1755 and in
1792 he was made a deputy customs collector and a navel officer. He was
appointed a surrogate judge in 1799 and held that position until his death.
He was responsible mainly for criminal and civil cases during a period of
great instability and change as Newfoundland made the transition from a
fishing base to a settled colony. Consequently, he was frequently involved in
controversial decisions. In 1755 he ordered two planters to leave the colony
and had their property burned when they were found to be Roman Catholic
sympathizers. In 1762 he organized 50 volunteers from Conception Bay to help
Lieutenant-Colonel William Amherst recapture St. John's from the French.

Charles Frederick Garland was a Newfoundlander of some renown. A member of the
the first five hundred in WW1, he enlisted as a private and rose to the rank
of 2nd. lieutenant. He was wounded at Beaumount Hamel but returned to duty
soon after. After the war, he was an active member of society and held the
position of Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod until the establishment of
Commission of Government. In 1982 Joe Smallwood credited Charl with
introducing him to the idea of confederation with Canada and Charl went on to
become Secretary Treasurer of the Newfoundland Confederation Association,
later becoming the Newfoundland Liberal Association. He retired in 1960 and
passed away on Mar. 5 1965.
Ian Garland reported in his email that his father (Clarence) said that he met
him for the one and only time in 1939 and that he was heading for Australia.

[CUFF] Justice of the Peace 1732-55. Inherited his father's (John) property at
Mosquito and Little Bell Island and then extended his family's operation to
Carbonear and Harbour Grace. During Queen Anne's War (1702-13) he was a
second captain in the Little Bell Island militia. By 1732 he was prominent
enough that he was appointed one of the first justices of the peace in
Conception Bay - a position that he held for 23 years.
[MULL2001a] gives birth date for wife of George Garland which matches Ann
Garland, therefore link to Ann probable.
[RIGGS] Inherited from his father-in-law, Benjamin Lester, one of the largest
and most prosperous mercantile establishments involved in the Nfld. fish
trade. Company was based in Poole, with Nfld HQ in Trinity.
[ref CUFF] George established business on his own account in 1805. He moved
to Poole as a young man to start a business in the corn trade. At Poole, he
came into contact with Benjamin Lester (#660), who carried on an extensive
business in the Newfoundland fishery. In 1799 he married Lester's daughter and
joined Benjamin Lester and Co. He gained partial control of the Lester estate
upon his father-in-law's death in 1802. He changed the name of the firm in
1805 and had full control of one of the largest firms in the Newfoundland
trade by 1813. He managed mercantile holdings stretching from Conception Bay
to Labrador, although the Newfoundland end of the trade was headquartered in
Trinity, TB. He never visited Newfoundland himself, depending instead on
agents in Trinity, who included his sons and many other relatives. He later
passed over to his sons the right to manage the business without him. He was
active in English politics, was MP for Poole 1801-06 and mayor in 1788 and
1810.

Information on George Augustus Garland and descendants provided by Judy Murray
(nee Garland) unless otherwise stated [MURRAYJ2001a]. George went to
Carbonear and in 1872 married his second wife. Newspaper mention of marriage
[ONEILL2001a] says George Augustus was the youngest son of George Garland,
implying that there were other sons. According to Pearl Garland #2629
[MURRAYJ2001f], George Augustus and Pat had James, Charles, William and Annie;
William was left behind with relatives when George moved to Carbonear; William
ended up in Belmont, Mass..
George and Mary were of Church of England religion. Mary wanted to get one of
her children baptised and the clergy wouldn't do it because she wasn't
churched. George got mad when he found out and went straight to Wesley Church
(which was located at the bottom of Alexander Street on ?? St.) and had the
child baptised. Since then, the Garland family has belonged to Wesley Church.

If the link is correct, then Henry died in 1831 at age 85.
Registry of Wills - Registrars Office, Superior Court of Nfld, Vol 1: excerpt
HENRY GARLAND Senior of Lower Island Cove - "to beloved wife - fishing room
and plantations during her natural life, then to be equally divided between
sons James and John. To my son Henry I bequeath a spot of land situate near
Sparks House formerly purchased from Christopher Harris, with my Bible. To son
Thomas - standing chest and silver buckle; to son William - feather bed and
bedding; residue to wife; sons James and John to remain with Mother." Dated
17 May 1823. Will executed 1828.
Henry had 5 sons as listed but it is speculation that M. Henry was his father.
Henry Garland Sr. (of the will) had a close relationship with the Snelgroves
because he is mentioned in their wills as executor. Ann Thacker Snelgrove's
mother and step father Richard Mullens were from Sturminster, Dorset and James
Snelgrove was probably from Winbourne, Dorset (now spelled Wimbourn). James'
will says something about leaving money with ? Butts of Winbourn. Speculation
of course.
It is speculated that this Henry was the son of Charles Garland and brother to
Joseph Garland and Mary Ann (McGrath) Garland. They all lived side by side on
Harvey Street, Harbour Grace according to the HG 1921 Census. Henry was a
cooper by trade and an inspector of fish.
Speculation removed based on family information from Chris Serjeant.
According to ref MOSD, there was a Henry Garland who died at the above date at
age 73. He was the Deputy Sheriff of Nfld. for several years. The dates seem
about right but lineage has not been confirmed. Ref [HOW] confirms date and
location of death and says that he was Duputy Sheriff of the Harbour Grace
district for several years.
Henry married his first cousin once removed, Elizabeth Pike. She was the
daughter of Charlotte Garland. Charlotte was the dau of Charles Davis
Garland. Charles's brother was John Davis Garland, Henry's father.
Baptised at 5 months.
Headstone says b. 1886.
Speculation: Perhaps it was this Henry who married Elizabeth Bursey. Or
perhaps it was Henry #1469 or someone else.
Speculation: Perhaps it was this Henry who married Isabella. Or perhaps it was
Henry #1440 or someone else.

This is the root ancestor of the Lower Island Cove Garlands.
All information on the Lower Island Cove Garlands is from FL1998a unless
otherwise stated. The information received was largely in the form of
baptismal records grouped by family and marriage records. In order to make
some sense of the records, ficticious 'placeholders' were introduced, eg,
LIC1750 Garland is a ficticious person born about 1750, to act as a
placeholder in the overall family tree. With this device, all families of the
same time frame but no known connection could be placed together in the
overall tree. It is not implied that these groupings have a common father;
they just lived at roughly the same time. This makes it easier to sort out
possible connections. The tree was created starting with the oldest families
first. As more recent families are entered, the previously entered records
were scanned to look for possible matches. Typically, the baptismal records
give parents' names but not their age. Sometimes, marriage records for these
people supply age and so they can be linked to their parrents with reasonable
certainty. Or direct connections could be inferred when names were relatively
unique, sons were named after grandfathers, etc. Other times, the connection
was deemed possible but not certain, such as when dates make the link of a
child to a later marriage possible, even probable, but not reasonably certain.
Such connections are indicated by the notation '? link' in the reference
field. Thus the details of the various families are correct with a high
degree of certainty but the overall lineage is, in many cases, speculative.
At the very least the tree as presented provides a platform for discussion,
correction and growth. Unless otherwise stated, an entry with the notation '?
link' means that this person was listed in baptismal records (hence parents
and siblings are certain) and the same name shows up in a marriage record some
20 or 30 years later; hence they are assumed to be the same person.
