The Perfect name has been traced to Devon, England. In Newfoundland, a William Perfect from Bathurst, Sussex, England settled at Ochre Pit Cove about 1830-40 and his brother settled in Western Bay (a community next to Ochre Pit Cove). There was a Richard of St. John's in 1756, a Samuel, mason of Western Bay , 1821 and a William, planter of Ochre Pit Cove, 1849. The name is rare. [SEARY1977]. The connection between Samuel (#1970) and WIlliam Perfect (#781) in this database herein has not been proven but presumably these are the two brothers mentioned by SEARY1977. This is not inconsistent with family information received from Mary Perfect (nee Follett) #438 and with source information found to date.
This is a place holder name for general information. - See the sources for this name for citation examples. - Use the 'Occupation' tag for the general source for a person. Put a '.' in the field to ensure the source is printed in reports. The word 'occupation' is translated to 'general source' in the indented book report.
All information on the Garland 'Strays' is largely from baptismal and marriage records. In order to make some sense of the records, ficticious 'placeholders' were introduced, eg, Stray1750 Garland is a ficticious person born about 1750, to act as a placeholder in the overall family tree. With this device, all families of the same time frame but no known connection could be placed together in the overall tree. It is not implied that these groupings have a common father; they just lived at roughly the same time. This makes it easier to sort out possible connections. The tree was created starting with the oldest families first. As more recent families are entered, the previously entered records were scanned to look for possible matches. Typically, the baptismal records give parents' names but not their age. Sometimes, marriage records for these people supply age and so they can be linked to their parrents with reasonable certainty. Or direct connections could be inferred when names were relatively unique, sons were named after grandfathers, etc. Other times, the connection was deemed possible but not certain, such as when dates make the link of a child to a later marriage possible, even probable, but not reasonably certain. Such connections are indicated by the notation '? link' in the reference field. Thus the details of the various families are correct with a high degree of certainty but the overall lineage is, in many cases, speculative. At the very least the tree as presented provides a platform for discussion, correction and growth. Unless otherwise stated, an entry with the notation '? link' means that this person was listed in baptismal records (hence parents and siblings are certain) and the same name shows up in a marriage record some 20 or 30 years later; hence they are assumed to be the same person.

Merchant. [Hunter 1895] says "Richard Benson of Bristol, merch't; will 19 Dec. 1675, prob. 7 Feb. bur. at Christ Church, Bristol, 1675." I suppose this to mean that he died sometime in 1675, likely around 19 Dec. 1675 when his will was read and his will was probated the following February.

Settled in Newfoundland. It is speculated that this Thomas Benson is the forefather of Thomas Joseph Benson #20.
Thomas was a seaman (1882) and fish culler (1902). Thomas and Annie lived at Stephen Street on 17 Sept 1882 when their son Samuel was baptised. Thomas died of lung cancer. Marriage certificate of his son, Samuel, lists Thomas' profession as fish culler and carpenter. EFG said he was a policeman. Unconfirmed. Also, EFG said that his father came from England. More likely, his ancestors came from England. There is another Thomas Benson died Dec 2, 1934, buried Church of England Cemetery, Forect Road, St. John's. [LETH1996] says that Thomas d.1934 was a fireman and is not the Thomas of this line.
1st wife: Martha Starkes, maybe died in childbirth, had a son Thomas. Died of lung cancer; he was a heavy smoker. Tinsmith and amateur boxer known as Pussyfoot Benson.

Speculation: There was a William Davis and wife mentioned in [BERRY1675] along with one other family, Jno Garland and wife. The frequent occurance of the name Davis in the Garland line suggests that a daughter of William Davis married a son of Jno Garland. The speculation is that Ann who married Jno's son George was a Davis.
Niece of Margaret Taylor #2568 m John Garland #2567, ie cousin of Judy Murray #2572.
[CUFF] reports that Ann Garland was a resident of Harbour Grace for a number of years and died of an epidemic at 117 (burial records) or 118 (headstone). This makes her the oldest person to have lived in Nfld. [MULL2001a] gives birth and death dates of George's wife that match Ann. Her maiden name is rumoured to be Davis.
